My Art Is Based on Nature’s Sacred Structure

The sacred structure in Nature has recently been formulated as fractal geometry. Nature’s art is composed of self-repeating shapes in different sizes. It is the inspiration for my watercolor paintings and altered photographs. Duncan Tooley

FRACTAL Geometry

  • A mathematical set that exhibits a repeating pattern displayed at every scale. It is also known as expanding symmetry or evolving symmetry.  —Wikipedia.org
  • A curve or geometric figure, each part of which has the same statistical character as the whole.  –-Google Mathematics

Natural Phenomena with Fractal Features

Fractals found in nature display self-similarity over large, but finite, scale ranges. The connection between fractals and leaves, for instance, is currently being used to determine how much carbon is contained in trees. Phenomena with fractal features include:
  • River networks
  • Fault lines
  • Mountain ranges
  • Craters
  • Lightning bolts
  • Coastlines
  • Mountain goat horns
  • Trees
  • Algae
  • Geometrical optics
  • Animal coloration patterns
  • Romanesco broccoli
  • Pineapple
  • Heart rates
  • Heart sounds
  • Earthquakes
  • Snowflakes
  • Psychological subjective perception
  • Crystals
  • Blood vessels and pulmonary vessels
  • Ocean waves
  • DNA
  • Soil pores
  • Rings of Saturn
  • Proteins                                                                              –Wikipedia.org

Mathematics in Nature

“The universe is written in the language of mathematics…without which it is humanly impossible to understand a single word of it; without this language, we wander about in a dark labyrinth.”  –Galileo Galilei

Binary Paintings

Binary means  ‘having 2 parts.”  The binary number system composes all numbers as a series of 1’s and o’s, an ideal match for electrical switches that are either on or off. The rise in technology is the result of the development of binary switches that quickly flip from a zero to a one.  First, it was military computers powered by vacuum tubes, then portable radios, calculators and digital watches powered by transistors, and now the billions of smartphones powered by a single chip processor engraved with millions of switches.

I use the binary code of 1’s and 0’s as a backdrop in many of my paintings and altered photographs to reflect the tension between the natural environment (Nature) and rapidly accelerating human technology. ►Go to the Binary Fractals
